DIVERSITY AND EQUALITY
The Communication Workers Union
campaigns against all forms of discrimination, it promotes and supports Equality and Diversity. The union has a number of
advisory committees to ensure that the needs of women, ethnic minorities, lesbians and gays and people with disabilities and
special needs are represented, the advisory committees also have there own conference where issues are debated and policy
is formed.
Diversity is an inclusive term that means everyone is a part of diversity. People are different
from one another in many ways, Diversity includes all of us and goes beyond policy it is about translating policy into practice.
British Telecom fully supports Diversity and have recently rolled out training on "Introducing Diversity" and "No Offence
Meant" which deals with Harassment and Bullying. Royal Mail has zero tolerance on harassment and bullying a fact that is welcomed
by the CWU.
We all work and live in a diverse community respecting each other's differences is fundamental
to creating trust and understanding everyone is responsible for preventing prejudice, discrimination ,harassment and bullying
if we all work together we can make a difference. If any one needs any advice support or help on these issues please do not
hesitate to contact the branch office.
SEX DISCRIMINATION AND WOMEN'S CAREER OPPORTUNITIES
Women
still hold less than ten per cent of the most senior positions in many areas of public life, according to a report published
by the Equal Opportunities Commission (EOC). Julie Mellor, Chair of the EOC, said the findings raised serious questions about
the ability of the decision makers to identify with the concerns of the general public.
"Women are still often
prevented from getting to the top because they take on more caring responsibilities than men. Until every organisation accepts
that they can't capitalise on the talent available without taking account of people's caring roles the profile of the people
who run Britain will not change. Institutions also need to examine their recruitment and selection procedures to check that
they are rigorous, fair and transparent. There's no place for an old boys' network in modern Britain.", she said.
Do
you feel bullied or harassed at work?
Bullying can take many forms and can be committed by either individuals,
groups of individuals or even by the employer (commonly known as corporate bullying).
The CWU has many policies
dealing with equality issues in order to ensure no one is discriminated against on the grounds of sexual orientation, religion,
politics, disability, or gender.
Employment legislation also covers these issues, as does Royal Mail through
its Diversity and Equality policies.
